The Modell Lyric is a non-profit performing arts center and live entertainment venue in Baltimore. They present a variety of music, dance, comedy, youth centric and educational programming of the highest quality to diverse audiences in the greater Baltimore and Maryland region. The Modell Lyric's Education Team provides innovative theater programs to youth in Baltimore City who do not have access to theater in their schools. The team works with youth across the city to devise theater performances based on the young people's experiences, passions, and strengths.
These workshops provide mostly middle school students with training in theater and creative writing. Our goal is to support student’s imagination and creative agency. Using fun, engaging exercises, students learn the necessary skills to present theatrical performances to their family and friends. These weekly workshops culminate in student’s performing their original writing. Each workshop site performs two shows—a holiday performance in December and a full-length production in spring.
At The Modell Lyric we know seeing live performance coupled with training in the arts can transform a young person’s life. Our in-school and summer programs in dance, theatre, music, and creative writing are supported by the belief that every person has a unique and important story to share. Just as Shakespeare wrote contemporary, relevant dramas for Elizabethan England, increased involvement in the arts can reflect the joys and struggles of our communities in new, compelling ways.
