Summer Access to Campus Shops, Labs and Proposal Process

Grad Lab Orientation

​Tuesday, June 18th, 12PM - 1:30PM

​5th Floor, Lazarus Center (Open to MAAE and MFAST)

Attending the Graduate Research Lab (Grad Lab) orientation session is essential for any student who is interested in using the Lab’s facilities.

The orientation session will help familiarize attendees with the Grad Lab’s schedule and policies, as well as, introduce students to the Grad Lab’s computing, scanning, video, sound, electronics and AV equipment offerings. Attending students will be added to the Lab’s equipment checkout system and given space on and access to the Grad Lab Drobo. Don’t know what a Drobo is? Come to orientation and find out!


 

Shop Access and Schedules

All shops (EXCEPT FLIV WOOD SHOP) are available via proposal process, unless currently enrolled in a class within respective studio.

Friday                    1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Saturday               3:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Sunday                  12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

*closed from 12-1pm for lunch

 


 

Proposal Process

Students should contact their respective Graduate Program Director for approval of proposed use of shop, after which, the project will be vetted by Fabrication Studios before final approval.

Use of Fabrication Studios requires knowledge of complex software, machinery and processes. Student should send proposal by email to the respective Studio Manager. Make sure to Cc Benjamin Kelley, Director of Fabrication Studios (bkelley@mica.edu) and your Graduate Program Director in the email.

*Access to Fabrication Studios is generally limited to regular business hours: Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Approved projects will be coordinated with the Studio Manager. Please email four business days in advance.

In your proposal email, include your (a) Name, (b) Program, (c) Year, and (d) Email.

Please also include the following as a project description:

  1. A brief summary of your project

  2. What equipment and materials will be used

  3. Your skill level of the equipment needed to complete the project

  4. Schedule of shop access requested (and any alternative times/dates that could be considered)
