Ambitious and Anxious: A Conversation with Dr. Yingyi Ma

November 19, 2021 - December 3, 2021

The Liberal Arts division is excited to have Dr. Yingyi Ma from Syracuse University join us for a presentation and question & answer session on December 3, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm. Dr. Ma will share her research, connected to higher education and inclusive pedagogy in the context of international students from China. Dr. Ma has recently published a book entitled Ambitious and Anxious, detailing her work with Chinese undergrads.

From Columbia University Press:
"In Ambitious and Anxious, the sociologist Yingyi Ma offers a multifaceted analysis of this new wave of Chinese students based on research in both Chinese high schools and American higher-education institutions. Ma argues that these students’ experiences embody the duality of ambition and anxiety that arises from transformative social changes in China."

From Syracuse University's website, "Yingyi Ma is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of Asian/Asian American Studies. She is the Provost Faculty Fellow on internationalization at Syracuse University, where she leads and supports culturally responsive pedagogy and programs for international education and partnership. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from Johns Hopkins University in 2007."

In order to support our preparation for Dr. Ma's presentation and Q&A with us, we are asking faculty to consider their needs and share their questions for Dr. Ma ahead of her talk.

For example, some potential discussion points for Dr. Ma:

How do Chinese students experience conversations about freedom of expression and political debate in MICA's classrooms?

How can we support student learning while respecting cultural orientation and lived experiences while avoiding microaggressions?

What would you like to understand better about contemporary Chinese education or "the New China" that would help you foster a more inclusive teaching environment?
