Curriculum Overview & Paths

Aperture Foundation Partnership

Stuart B. Cooper Endowed Chair in Photography

Jan Meyer Traveling Fellowship

This Partnership, established in 2014, is designed to enrich the BFA in Photography curriculum at MICA with the programming at Aperture Foundation, one of contemporary photography’s most important publishers. Each year, a select number of Aperture artist workshops and lectures take place on the MICA campus in Baltimore, and a undergraduate photography student is selected for a paid internship with Aperture Foundation in New York City. Funding for this program has generously been provided by Sb Cooper and R. L. Besson, Besson/Cooper Fund, Inc. As a result our collaboration it includes one Artist-Residency in the Fall with an interactive workshop and one Artist Lecture in the spring each year, as well as a field trip to the New York headquarters guided by an Aperture team member to observe their operations!

The Internship

The Maryland Institute College of Art and Aperture Foundation have partnered together to create an eight-week summer internship design for qualified photography majors in their junior or senior year. The purpose of this program is to expose a soon to graduate photography student to a wide range of activities that define Aperture, from editing, design, production, circulation, sales, and marketing of photography’s most significant publications; the creation of web content; educational programs for children and adults, and other business and development operations essential to a non-profit organization. In addition to working closely with the Aperture staff and contributing to the day to day work flow of the office, the MICA intern will make contacts within the photo community at Aperture events and through meetings with various professionals in the photography field. Aperture Foundation’s location offers the opportunity to work in New York City and have access to art galleries, museums, and other art-related facilities. During your time at Aperture, you will assist with the following programs/projects:

Aperture Summer Open: an open-submission exhibition for which all photographers who are Aperture Members are eligible to submit.

Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards: this award celebrates the photobook’s contribution to the evolving narrative of photography, with three major categories: First PhotoBook, Photography Catalogue of the Year, and PhotoBook of the Year.
