Deadline October 04, 2020

Lapis is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal of art history, architecture, archaeology, and art conservation published by the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. Lapis is dedicated to scholarly articles on art history from all fields by graduate students and early career scholars internationally. In considering art history as a trans-temporal and interdisciplinary practice tightly linked to material culture, Lapis strives to present studies that are broad in chronological, geographic, and methodological scope.

The editors are eager to receive articles that address a diverse range of topics and are especially interested in reviewing work on pre-modern or non-Western topics and technical studies of works of art. Lapis is committed to presenting interdisciplinary research, encouraging topics and methodologies that expand beyond traditional art history. Technical submissions should emphasize how a better understanding of materials and craftsmanship influence the interpretation, presentation, and preservation of works of art. Papers bolstered by evidence derived from scientific analysis, specialized imaging, and conservation treatments are particularly welcome. Please note that such papers should contain a significant art historical component.

The editors acknowledge that exclusionary, oppressive practices within the field have long perpetuated intolerance and inequality. These must be addressed: we do not condone the ongoing exclusion of people of color, especially Black and Indigenous identifying groups, from the study of art history, architecture, archaeology, and conservation. Lapis strives to dismantle barriers within art historical scholarship and is eager to receive scholarship from members of historically marginalized communities.
