Fiber Students and Queer Threads Exhibition

Fiber faculty and artist Aaron McIntosh collaborated with curator John Chaich and the MICA Exhibitions Department to bring “Queer Threads: Crafting Identity and Community” to the Decker Gallery this academic year. The traveling exhibition examines lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) identities and ideas through fiber crafts. A dynamic series of artist talks and craft events were held throughout the exhibition, including a month‐long project facilitated by Aubrey Longley‐Cooke to engage community members in creating stitched portraits celebrating Baltimore’s LGBTQ leaders and everyday people. Other visiting artists included Harmony Hammond, Jesse Harrod, Rebecca Levi, John Thomas Paradiso, and Nathan Vincent. McIntosh also developed a course “Queer Threads: Response” that convened during the Spring semester to engage students with the objects, processes and issues in the exhibition. Students developed studio projects in response to the show, curating and producing their own exhibition.
