ARTIST STATEMENT:

Utilitarian Surface is an installation occupying the space I have been using as a studio, transforming it into a textural light-scape. Over the past two months, working in this space, I have taken note of the materials and geometric forms which make up the space, including the rough foundation walls and the ceiling with its repeated rectilinear cavities. Along with these structural elements, this basement space houses equipment for the electrical, water, and hvac systems presenting a wide range of materials and surfaces ready to catch light and shadow in unique ways. The addition of the plastic sheeting adds another layer of visual interest and creates a fusion of natural and synthetic material.

The light-scape created for this work takes advantage of this pre-existing network of surfaces as a canvas, building on the inherent material intelligence by accentuating texture and surface finish. I hope you enjoy these little textural compositions.
